2026 A/L results

When they come out, how to check yours, what the results sheet shows, and what to do in the first week.

Release date

Not announced yet. The Commissioner General of Examinations has said the 2026 A/L results will be released before the end of 2026 — about three months earlier than the last results, which came out on 31 March 2026, because the exam itself moved back to August.

The exam ran from 10 August to 5 September 2026: 372,310 candidates — 264,496 from schools and 107,814 private — at 2,532 centres. Marking began on 3 September (Ada Derana).

How to check your results

  1. Have your index number ready. It is on your admission card — write it down somewhere safe now, not on results day.
  2. Open the Department of Examinations' results site: doenets.lk, or results.exams.gov.lk. They are the only official places.
  3. Choose the 2026 G.C.E. (A/L) examination and enter your index number.
  4. Save your results as a screenshot or PDF. Schools receive printed copies later.

The sites are slow on results day. If one will not load, try the other or come back later — your results do not change. Never pay a site to see them, and never give your index number to one that asks for money.

What your results sheet shows

A grade for each subject
A, B, C, S (a simple pass) or F (a fail).
Your Common General Test mark
You need at least 30% of it for university.
Your Z-score
The number universities select on, compared with everyone who sat the same subjects.
Your district rank and island rank
Where you placed in your stream.

Do you qualify for university?

The UGC asks for two things:

  • at least an S in all three subjects, in one sitting, within three attempts; and
  • at least 30% in the Common General Test.

Qualifying only puts you in the running. Selection is by your Z-score, your district and the order of your course list — what the 2026 batch should know about cut-offs.

If a grade looks wrong: re-scrutiny

In recent years the Department of Examinations has accepted re-scrutiny applications online only, in a window of about two weeks that opens soon after results. The dates and the link are announced with the results, so look for them on the day. Re-scrutiny can change a grade, and university selection uses the results after re-scrutiny.

Your first week after results

  1. 1

    Save everything

Your results, your Z-score, your district and your ranks. You will type them into forms for months.

  2. 2

Decide on re-scrutiny while the window is open

If a grade looks wrong, apply. The window is short and is not reopened for anyone.

  3. 3

Put your Z-score into the free checker

It lists every course your stream can apply for against last round's cut-off in your district. That is your long list.

  4. 4

Get ready for the UGC application

Last time it opened about four weeks after results and stayed open for three. Have your course list in order before it opens.

  5. 5

    Plan the wait

The first lecture is usually many months after results. Decide now what those months are for.

  2. 2026 A/L results

    Expected

Before the end of 2026, most likely December

  3. UGC handbook and online application (2026/2027 intake)

    Expected

Expected January 2027, about four weeks after results

Last time applications opened four weeks after results and stayed open for three weeks. The UGC confirms the dates. Have your course list ready before it opens, not during.

  4. Z-score cut-offs and selection

    Expected

Expected around mid-2027, several months after applications close

Selection is by Z-score, district and the order of your preferences. Aptitude-test courses have their own dates in the handbook.

Questions about the 2026 A/L results

When will the 2026 A/L results be released?

The exact date had not been announced when this page was last checked. The Commissioner General of Examinations said in August 2026 that the results will be released before the end of 2026, which makes December the most likely month.

How do I check my 2026 A/L results?

Online, on the Department of Examinations' results sites — doenets.lk or results.exams.gov.lk — with your index number. Save a screenshot or PDF; schools receive printed copies later.

Is my Z-score on the results sheet?

Yes. Your Z-score is printed on the results sheet with your subject grades, your Common General Test mark and your district and island ranks.

What do I need to qualify for university?

At least an S in all three subjects in one sitting, within three attempts, and at least 30% in the Common General Test. Qualifying is not the same as being selected: selection is by Z-score, district and the order of your course list.

How do I apply for re-scrutiny?

In recent years the Department of Examinations has accepted re-scrutiny applications online only, in a window of about two weeks that opens soon after results. The dates and the link are announced with the results.

What if my results are not what I hoped?

You can sit the A/L again, within the three attempts the UGC allows, or take another route — an external or distance degree, a professional qualification or vocational training. The after-A/L guide covers each.
